Keeping Jewish Education a Priority in the Current
Economic Environment
A bad economy brings with it cuts to programs that are not deemed "essential"
to the community. How can we deal withthe irony of communities' declarations
that education is a priority, while so many programs are being cut? Participants
in this breakout session will re-examine their personal journey in the profession,
reminding ourselves of the passion and vision we had for Jewish learning. We
will inventory where these passions and visions are evident in our home
communities, and develop a model ecology of a community where Jewish
learning is integrated into multiple venues. Participants will wonder together
about new structures that break down silos and encourage new models of
Jewish communal service where education towards identity and belonging are
central. One model, communities of practice, will be examined to see how this
state of art term can inform our work. The session will close on the hopeful note
of visualizing what an ideal community would look like, where Jewish learning is
truly at its core.

Managing in Difficult Times: Balancing Donor &
Community Needs
The current global economic crisis is having a significant impact on the nonprofit sector. While mission-driven organizations have seen dramatic increases in demand for their services and predict that the demand will continue to increase, they are also extremely concerned about the philanthropic environment and worry about how they will be able to support an increase in services with an expected decrease in charitable contributions.
How can our Jewish communal organizations deal with the strain presented by the current economic situation? Of course, we need to ensure that the organization can remain financially viable during the economic downturn, but we also need to ensure that the organization remains strong and healthy. We will discuss how Federations and other Jewish communal organizations are adapting their business plans to enable them to meet the aspirations of their donors as well as be best positioned to fulfill its mission.
